Software Engineering Institute

A federally funded research and development center operated by Carnegie Mellon University, the SEI includes the CERT Program, which identifies Internet security vulnerabilities and works to improve the security of networked systems.

Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center

The PSC provides researchers nationwide with access to several high-performance computing systems and is a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, together with Westinghouse Electric Company.

Major Buildings

Gates Center for Computer Science
Hillman Center for Future Generation Technologies

The Gates and Hillman centers, opened in 2009, include 217,000 square feet of classroom, office and laboratory space. Designed by Mack Scoggin Merrill Elam Architects of Atlanta, Ga., the buildings are LEED Gold certified as a green building in 2011 and won the American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Architecture in 2012. The buildings are home to the School of Computer Science offices, Computer Science Department, Machine Learning Department, Languages Technologies Institute and the Ray and Stephanie Lane Center for Computational Biology.

Newell-Simon Hall

Newell-Simon Hall, opened in 2000, includes 140,000 square feet of classroom, office and laboratory space. The building is home to the Robotics Institute and the Human-Computer Interaction Institute.
