iDrac Express configuration

Express has most of the feature set of Enterprise with the remote console feature disabled.  So most of configuration is identical.

The main difference is that it uses shared with LAN Port  1. Theoretically it can share any port,  but I've found it almost always is shared only on Port 1.   Here is a critpic commnet that contrdicts this idea (iDRAC7 express setup - Dell Community):

RE: iDRAC7 express setup

You can use ANY LOM port for iDRAC share mode. In this case you can either use LOM 1/2 which is already connected and configured on the server. You can also use LOM 3 or 4 for iDRAC shared traffic. You can not assign any of the LOM port only for iDRAC traffic. It will be share across iDRAC and Host.

The port used (which probably means LOM 1 -- Lan On Motherboard port 1)  should be already connected and configured on the server. But nothing prevent you to use it as dedicated post if, for example you have two or four Ethernet ports. This needs to be re-checked.

Drac Express has look and feel of Drac enterprise and is configured and accessed the same way as Enterprise. Web interface is also the same with notable omission of WEB console and no virtual media support.

But you can configure serial console.

Express lets you do IPMI which includes serial over LAN. That means you can issue reboot commands and see the bios and basic POST over the network using an IPMI client like IPMI tool.

You should be able to do that with the serial console over LAN that Paladin mentioned. You'll need to make sure IPMI is enabled (under Network Settings in the iDRAC setup) and that the serial ports are set properly (under System Setup) - you'll want serial console enabled over COM2, Serial Device1=COM1,Serial Device2=COM2, and the External Serial Connector set to Serial Device 1.

Then you can use ipmitool to connect to the serial console.

RE: iDRAC7 express setup
Williamc671,

The ports are dictated by the iDrac installed. The Express requires the port to be configured as Shared, where the iDrac Enterprise is Dedicated. This is because the Dedicated port is part of the Enterprise add-in itself. So there isn't a way to use the Dedicated with the Express, as it isn't present.

With Shared the iDrac Express will share NIC 1/2 with the standard network traffic. The Dedicated frees up the Nics to use all their speed for traffic alone. Plus it allows you to configure the iDrac connection to be set on a different network from normal traffic, increasing security. With the Express the LOM assignment does correspond with the matching NIC port.

The Dedicated port can be identified on the server by locating the port with the Wrench over it.

Hope this clears things up for you.

Solved- iDRAC 7 express , nic teaming - Dell Community

The iDRAC Express does NOT allow you to use a dedicated NIC for remote access but rather use one of the LAN on Motherboard (LOM) as a shared port.
RE: iDRAC 7 express , nic teaming Hello.

Yes, it is by design. The iDRAC Express does NOT allow you to use a dedicated NIC for remote access but rather use one of the LAN on Motherboard (LOM) as a shared port. Now, once you have Teaming on the LOM ports, then the iDRAC Express can no longer share any the ports with the team.

The workaround is to upgrade to iDRAC Enterprise that uses a dedicated port separate from the NIC Team for management traffic.
