Note: HP renamed the product called now HP operations manager way too many times. Also it is very inconsistent with using abbreviations. Here we will assume that the term "HP Operations manager" and abbreviations HPOM, OMU, and OVO mean the same thing :-)
Similar to Tivoli documentation, HPOM documentation is badly written, fragmentary and incomplete. You need to rely on Operations Manager forum for most questions as you probably never find the answers the docs. Often the only way got get a satisfactory answer quickly is to open a ticket.
Try to attend or at least get student manual for the class Linux Administration Essentials (OM90LINUXESS). It consists of two parts. And those two are the best printed manual for HPOM money can get. The second class and the second manual (also in two parts) Linux Advanced Administration is also very useful, but the first is really essential.

Instructor-Led Training OVERVIEW
This 5-day instructor led course focuses on the essential administrative tasks for HP Operations Manager on Linux or HP Operations Manager on UNIX. You will learn how to effectively monitor, manage, and report on the health and performance of systems and applications in a heterogeneous IT environment using HP Operations Manager on Linux. The course is delivered using the Linux platform, but applies to all three UNIX platforms where Operations Manager can be installed. The course reinforces concepts with extensive hands-on lab exercises.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Create and modify user (operator) accounts for HP Operations Manager
- Configure system and application monitoring through policies.
- Configure automatic responses to system or application problems.
- Perform basic HP Operations Manager agent installation.
- Configure nodes, node groups, message groups, tools, policy groups, and other essential elements for use by both administrators and operators.
- Use the Java Operator GUI to perform day-to-day tasks on messages.
- Configure policies, messages, and commands for use in dealing with enterprise activities.
- Choose appropriate techniques for managing devices using policies.
- Use the Administrator UI to perform common administrative functions.
- Administer and maintain HP Operations Manager, its database, and users, including backups of the environment.
- Perform needed tasks to manage messages and message content.
INTENDED AUDIENCE This course is intended for anyone tasked with the administration of HPOperations Manager 9.x on any of the following platforms:
- Linux
- HP-UX
- Solaris
PREREQUISITES
For best success with this course, students should have working knowledge of or formal training in,the following:
- Fundamentals and administration of a UNIX or Linux operating system.
- Understanding of the basic elements of ITIL and ITSM.
- Good knowledge of network management and network management common protocols, such as TCP, UDP, and IP.
- Experience with POSIX, UNIX shell, or Perl scripting.
